THE ROTTWEILER IN GENERAL

A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE BREED HOPEFULLY A HELPFUL GUIDE
IN ASSISTING YOUR DECISIONS OF PURCHASING YOUR ROTT’

We hope this information package will be of help to you. It will explain to you,
how to go about, purchasing the

RIGHT ROTTWEILER PUPPY FROM THE RIGHT BREEDER.

Why should you be concerned about it? The answer is simple,
When you buy a ROTTWEILER you want a healthy dog, which can walk,
ACTS and LOOKS as Rottweiler, CKC registrations is not a guarantee of these things,
but guarantees the dog is purebred, so registration papers is one of the things you should look at.

It is the BUYER BEWARE market,
LEARN what questions to ask and inquire about registration, certificates, that state
your prospective puppy’s parents where free of HIP DYSPLASIA (OFA).
A puppy of 8 month or younger with HIP DYSPLASIA is certainly no bargain.
Make sure you will get a written health guarantee stating the full replacement of that dog,
a good breeder will certainly not have a problem doing so, knowing he has healthy dogs.

BEFORE DECIDING ON A ROTTWEILER

Ask yourself why you want one and will it fit into your family.
Owning a ROTTI can be a pleasure, or it can also be a nightmare.
When treated and trained properly, ROTTWEILERS are normally quiet, easy going dogs and are a joy to own.
They have a special talent for developing strong ties and loyalties, which make them NATURAL PROTECTORS.
Rottweilers do not just need attention instead they DEMAND it.
(This can be a disadvantage if the owner does not have much time to spend with the dog).

SOME PLEASURES OF OWNING A ROTTWEILER

Relatively short coat, which does not require as much grooming or trimming as a long coated dog.
As adults they are very quiet, yet natural protectors.
They form deep long lasting relationships with their masters and close family.
VERY GOOD with children, if brought up in a responsible way, around RESPONSIBLE CHILDREN.

SOME DISADVANTAGES OF OWING A ROTTWEILER

They do shed at least twice a year.
As a large dog, they need more food and therefore their droppings will be larger.
Although generally a gentle breed, they can become boisterous during play and UNINTENTIONALLY injure someone.
People who already have a male of female dog, obtaining the same sex of a ROTTWEILER
adds to the disadvantage and is not advised. Get the opposite sex from what you’ve already got.

IS THE ROTTWEILER RIGHT FOR ME

To find out if the ROTTWEILER is the right dog for you educate yourself,
learn as much as you can about the breed. You may regret it later, if you don’t.
In Addition to reading, talk to ROTTI owners, ask the breeder as many questions as you can.
Talk to the different breeders, have an open mind, each breeder has his own opinion
regarding the ideal conformation, temperament and goal or reasons of breeding.
Listen to all, question them and form your own opinion.
Don’t buy only because the dogs are beautiful and/or won ribbons,
but you really don’t approve of the breeders themselves, or the opposite.
Make sure you like everything about the breeder, environment and the dogs.
Before deciding to purchase a ROTTWEILER you must make a decision of whether or not
you are willing and able to commit this kind of time and effort.
After all you would not want to be a negligent ROTTWEILER owner or a former owner,
after abandoning your ROTTI because you didn’t realize how much he eats,
or because you could not handle and control the dog. ..short just because you
did not do YOUR HOMEWORK prior to the purchase..

CHOOSING A GOOD BREEDER

Don’t be in a hurry, a REPUTABLE BREEDER more than likely will not have a puppy immediately available to you.

REASON: A good breeder breeds only if at least half the anticipated litter is sold, if the dogs are x-rayed (OFA)
and not before the bitches are minimum two years of age.

Only dogs of sound temperament and good conformation will be in the breeding program. A good breeder will
NEVER sell to pet shops or bargain over the price (so called special deal)

A REPUTABLE BREEDER will also allow and encourage you to ask as many questions as you can,
offer what ever amount of time it takes, to have an open ear and to make sure you DO make the right choice.

One MAIN FACTOR of a good breeder is, NOT to show you a PUPPY FIRST (if available at the time of your visit).
PUPPY’S ARE CUTE AND SELL EASY, REMEMBER THIS IS A BIG NONO.
It is substantial the breeder shows you all the adult dogs (parents, relatives) first,
sit down with you again for some more questions and last not least if YOU insist then bring out a puppy.

ENVIRONMENT

Another important factor you should look for is, if the environment the dogs live in is clean,
how do the dogs react towards the breeder, any major aggression or submission obvious?
Let the breeder explain and use your instincts and common sense..
Last not least how are the puppies raised from the first day of their life, where are they kept,
what is the daily procedure to care for them do they appear to be healthy, outgoing, stable.
Does the breeder know the difference in temperament, that will tell you how much time they spend with the litter
and therefore the pup's should be well socialized.

IMPORTANT: A CAREFUL BREEDER will not let you touch the puppies prior to their first vaccination and will not allow you
to walk in with shoes.. NOT TO ENDANGER THE PUPS!!!!

WARNING SIGN IS when the breeder isn’t very interested in YOU.
A good breeder cares A GREAT DEAL where his pups go and how they will be treated.
You as the buyer need to know what you are getting into ..

LONG DISTANCE PURCHASE

If you buy through phone and/or mail, make sure you buy from a
RESPONSIBLE BREEDER, ASK FOR REFERENCES,
make sure the breeder provides you with an extensive INFO PACK and also won’t mind
some phone conversations, to insure you DO HAVE THE PROPER INFO you need.. and be prepared
to answer any questions which the breeder may ask you in order to ensure some security to for the breeder .

DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE as said before no ETHICAL BREEDER
WOULD SELL TO A STORE... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

Any dogs purchased from a pet store aren’t registerable with the CKC,
NO MATTER what they promise ..you WILL HAVE NO GUARANTEE with your purchase.

REMEMBER YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT FOR YOUR PUPPY A FEW MONTH, BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT !!!!!
